FRIDAY FICTIONEERS- 13 December 2013
Optimist
Six years old Grandson, whose both feet had been amputated, when he was four had long back accepted his disability and tried to be always happy lest grandma becomes sad, suddenly requested his grandma-‘ I want shoes! ‘
Grandma, who was taking him for a ride in his wheelchair, looked sadly at him.
‘ Don’t look so sad dear, I want them for my best friend, he cannot buy shoes and cannot play without them,’ said he.
Grandma lovingly showered blessings on him.
He laughed ‘ One day, with your blessings I am going to climb Mount Everest like ‘Tom Whitekar‘ and ‘Arunima Sinha.
( Tom Whittaker (born in 1948 in York) was the first disabled person to climb Mount Everest’s summit.[1]
Whittaker’s right foot needed to be amputated following a car accident in 1979. Following this severe accident, he regained his strength and continued climbing.

Arunima “Sonu” Sinha (born 1988) is the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest.[1] She is also the first Indian amputee to climb Mount Everest.[2][3]
She was a national-level volleyball player pushed out of a running train by thieves in 2011 while resisting them. One of her legs had to be amputated below the knee as a result.
When I think of a gift I would say optimism is one of them.We easily give up when things are difficult. I believe those two amputees did not give up hope, which is the reason they were able to accomplish such a feat.
Thank you for this post Indira.

Indira, what a wonderful story to read this Sunday morning. Optimism is a wonderful gift (or worth striving for if it doesn’t come naturally.) That he could think of his best friend was wonderful, too.
