A Month of Mini Writing Challenges 2017

You’re on your way to work and a new, strange-looking shop has opened overnight.  You are drawn to it and go in but what – or who – is inside?  Tell us in less than 100 words.

A blood red painted shop with a signboard in white ‘KILLING IS FUN, JOIN IN’ was strange enough for me to enter the shop. It was full of various kinds of Mannequins.

The receptionist, with a counter full of knives, invited,’  choose any knife, put the face of the one you want to kill on any mannequin and stab as much you like, you’ll feel light-hearted.’

My obvious choice was my rude boss.

I stabbed to my heart’s content.

Delight, I turned and noticed my boss entering the shop.

His face was still intact on the mannequin.

Better Deal

“Why me, didn’t I deserve a better deal’, I always whined, whenever I thought life is depriving me.

Parents and siblings always tried to show me the brighter side of everything with, ‘God loves you more.’

Today my slice of bread was not whole so’ less butter’ it meant.

I moaned.

Mother laughed, ‘it’s not my fault, and you were late so you get what is left.

Father intervened, ‘ it has a heart in it. What a lucky girl! , the mother has given you her heart.’

Siblings pounced on it.

Now we all had a piece of mother’s heart.

A Month of Mini Writing Challenges 2017-

Immersion

I’m sitting on a rock on the sea beach watching immersion of Idols of Lord Ganesha, Just four days ago we were worshiping him with full fun and frolics, with flowers and sweets. Now it is time for him to go back to his heavenly abode, hence the immersion in the sea. Waves reverently envelop him slowly and take him down under the sea. I feel sad.

After one week I’m sitting at the same place. I observed remnants of those beautiful idols washed ashore by the waves. Sea never keeps anything. It returns whatever is offered to it.

Unforgettable Bath

He should have gone home straight after completing his job, as was arranged.

But, he decided to look around, envying the way these super rich lived.

What attracted him most was a, magnificent bathroom fitted with facilities beyond his imagination.

A well stocked bar! This was irresistible.

What he needed, he assured himself, was a luxurious bath and a good stiff drink. Bottle in one hand he immersed himself in the bathtub filled with lukewarm water and fragrant salts, and switched on the music.

Slowly he drifted into a heavenly sleep.

Morning found the poor fellow surrounded by the policemen.

Vengeance Spree

‘Can you see the horses talking in human voice?’

‘There is nothing you drunken fool and after one bottle even stones talk to you. ‘She switched off the light and was gone.

They came near haughtily, ‘we are ghost of horses you killed either take either to revenge or for meat.’

‘I can’t even dream of that, I love horses,’ I stammered.

‘You human beings are not reliable; you’ll not shy away from eating even human beings if starving.’

’I can’t even dream of it. ‘I was shaking.

‘Better not.’ They said menacingly, ‘we are on a vengeance spree tonight.’

ROOFLESS

‘Be grateful for the roof on your head, millions lives without one and had to survive scorching heat, rains, flood and rough weather. ‘ Mother said.

‘Ha! I was destined to be your child and have one on my head. I’m blessed to find shelter under you both.’

‘We are not rich; no one knows what will happen one day so always be thankful for whatever you have got.’

 I learned the hard way.

Sudden demise of father made us vacant the government accommodation we were occupying.

Till we got another shelter, we were roofless for few hours.

UNGRACIOUS?

‘Why  have you  lit lamps when there is no power cut today dear?’

‘You know granny has no electricity in her home but she used to make choicest of delicacies. I’m experimenting from one of her recipes so I’m creating the same atmosphere honey.’

‘So nice of you but make it only for you, my friend has invited me for dinner.’

And he was off to some unknown friend.

He always does that.

Whenever I experiment something new, his friends pop up from nowhere to invite him for lunch or dinner.

How Ungracious!

Retreat

My spiritual guru’s voice was ringing in my head as I started climbing the stairs.

‘Each step will take you to the eternal light. Don’t look back .Surrender and you will attain enlightenment and salvation’

I thought it easy as I had nothing to lose except this sickly body which has given me nothing but miseries.

I was about to take the plunge when fear of surrendering to unknown grasped me.

Back there was at least world of known hell of addictive miseries. Whereas here was surrendering to unknown about which I was not sure.

I retreated to my hell.

Compassion

Rioters burned the tailor’s shop. It was opposite to our house.

When the curfew was lifted, he came and sat down in despair on seeing the ramshackle shop.

Mother called him and offered him our old singer machine for the time he could buy his own.

He was thankful and offered to stitch our clothes for free.

 Mother strongly rejected the idea.

‘You need money to buy a new machine. So start your business first and save money.’

Mother was a conservative Hindu and the tailor was a Muslim.

Mother sowed a seed of compassion, for everyone, in me that day.
