In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Symbol.”
Mangalsutra is a symbol of wedlock to a Hindu woman. The word ‘mangalsutra’ is derived from the two words, mangal meaning holy or auspicious and sutra meaning thread. Nowadays instead of thread it is made of black beads and gold pendent. The groom ties it around the bride’s neck on wedding day.
Black beads in it are believed to have divine powers and protect the couple from evil eyes and safeguard the the husband’s life. It is much more than a piece of jewelry. It is a sacred piece of love trust and happiness.
