This image makes me think of masks.
No one can swear that he/she never put a mask on his life, whatever may be the situation.
We don’t show our emotions to everyone especially with whom we are not familiar. We want to show our good side only to them. Sometimes, even to our good friends or close relatives, siblings and parent we hide behind a mask. We have lots of masks. One for each role and each situation. I think it’s okay and it’s only natural.
That reminds me of my first encounter with a lady at a community festival. What a pretty woman, was my first reaction. Then I noticed she had a friendly radiant face with an infectious smile.
Slowly I came to know about her other qualities. I found her participating in every function, teaching children dance or songs, oozing out energy. She was an excellent singer, dancer and a perfect house maker. Excellent in embroidery, stitching, and whatnot. OMG! I thought How can God be so biased? Bestowing all good qualities on one person.
She and her husband were an ideal couple. I wanted to be like her. Soon she captivated my heart with her charm. We became friends.
When we became more close, she confided that she has no children. There was nothing wrong with her or her husband still she was deprived of motherhood. She had to bear the taunts from in-laws and neighbors and some mean friends also. You know our society? Even if someone can take it as destiny and move on and busy themselves in work and helping others, some people will not let you live in peace. But she never showed her grief to others. She always kept smiling and helping others.
Till now I admired her but now I respected her for her courage. I found she didn’t put a mask but accepted the reality and lived with that to her best ability.
After her husband’s retirement, she went far away from me. She is still living a worthwhile life.
She is still my ideal woman.

I think I have a split personality.
One part of me feels deeply connected to each and everything. With people, trees, sea, planets, etc. Even with ants, birds, and animals. As if I’m an extension of nature connected with everyone and everything with an invisible cord. There is love, harmony, and understanding of everything.
On the other hand, my other part seems disconnected to everything and everyone, even my near and dear ones, my friends. How much we know about each other? Everyone seems like an Island. Sometimes I feel as if I am standing very far away from everyone, detached. Looks like everyone is hiding behind a mask. They are not what they seem to be.
Or I am the one who is wearing a mask? I’m confused, very confused. Who is the real me?

Forlorn grandmother sitting in a chair at old age home suddenly smiles, visualizing her two grandchildren, a boy and a girl playing their favorite game ‘ Mermaids in trouble’.
They took all the cushions and hid under them, s if trapped inside the sea reefs, while she, forced by them to join the game, wearing a sea diver’s mask pretended to save them.
Their favorite part was her feigning that the damn mask obstructed her view, run here and there clumsily and fall on them; they will roll over each other on the floor laughing hysterically.
How she longs for those days.
